We have a lot of pigeons in our hostel. It is actually a bird santuaury of pigeons. It is nice to see them on the hostel roof. Sometimes they seem to form a boundary on the roofs. The most blissful of the things is to see their nests in our balconies. Actually we have two balconies, one associated with the room and one with the toilets. Usually the balcony beside the toilet remains deserted. One of my friends Popat used to spread bajra in his bathroom balcony. A lot of pigeons used to come to have their meals. They built a nest and laid eggs as well. There were two cute baby pigeions born. In continuation of my friend I started spreading bajra in my bathroom balcony. I also kept apot of water for the pigeons. Because I expected them to make nests, I kept a beautiful wooden basket. I thought it will be used, but it remained vacant for quite a long time. But today As I oped the Balcony door, two pigeons flew away very fast. To my surprise I saw a beutiful nest in the basket and an egg was lying in it. The colour of the nest and the basket matched so much that it seemed as if the basket has been made for this purpose only. While I refilled the water pot, the pigeons parents waited on the roof of the opposite building. I finished my work and closed the door to give them some family time.

Nice Pankaj,I too had the nest in my balcony. It was exciting experiance to watch the baby peigons growing everyday & to see that they have started flying.
Hello Pankaj,
This is a nice blog that you have started. And with a very good topic.I whole heartedly agree that there are lots and lots of pigeons in and around our hostel buildings.
Our hostel complex is actually like a bird sanctuary.
Have you noticed the number of other types of birds that live and roam and romp around here?
The ones which I have noticed are 1.The Proud Peacock of course with its brood,
2.The Common hornbill,
3.The Kingfisher,
4.The Indian Tree-pie with its long brown/black/white striped tail,
5.The Eagle,
6.The Raven.
Among the common birds are
1.The common Mayna,
2.The Seven Sisters (grey coloured noisy birds),
3.Parrots,
4.The Robin,
5.Common Crow,
6.Our loved inseparable Pigeons,
I have heard partridges too, but haven't sighted them.
Truely a very interesting place to live in.
It is very interesting to watch these birds and try to learn their behaviour from ones' own door step.
I also serve them 4 types of grain and water to feed them.
Though ideally we should not be doing this because the birds then tend to grow away from their natural habitat and habits and start depending on the grain that is provided by us (the humans).
But in India tradition/culture is such that it is considered auspicious to feed birds.
Anyone sights any birds other than the ones mentioned above should please share.
Thank you very much mam, for taking time to read it. I was not aware that there are some many varieties of birds. I thought that if our library had the Book about Birds By Saleem Ali, then we can actually learn some amazing facts.
a very nice topic, some lovely posts(Pankaj , could particularly see ur basket with the eggs in it and the watchful bird parents in my mind ), and interesting information for bird watchers at ACMS...and Poppat is alwayz upto sumthing ..isn t it?
